Peru Balsam “Signature” Resinoid

Peru balsam resinoid is a wonderfully sweet and complex exudate from myroxylon balsamum trees which have been intentionally scarred with cuts and burns to promote the outpouring of the healing raw gum. This exudate, or drug, is collected via cotton cloths which are pressed to the weeping trunk of the tree. Once removed from the clothes, the balsam is washed and made into a resinoid via ethanol or other solvent extractions to produce the IFRA safe product we stock.

Peru balsam has a strongly vanilla quality and could be said to have the odiferous properties of a blend of vanilla absolute, benzoin resinoid and styrax resinoid. It is sweet, resinous, leathery, cinnamyl and powdery.

Peru balsam resinoid is of a viscous but pourable consistency so we sell it pure. Note that this is the rare deep brown resinoid and not the clear essential oil, an entirely different product.

Origin: El Salvador
Variety: Myroxylon Balsamum L. var pereirae Klotzsch
Part: Exudate from tree bark
Method of production: Solvent extraction
