Karo Karounde TruAbs®

Karo karounde is one of perfumery's lost treasures. The original absolute came from the flowers of Leptactina senegambica, a wild shrub from the Fouta Djalon mountains of Guinea — related to gardenia and coffee. Early European botanists mistook it for a new species of jasmine. Production has effectively ceased: fewer than 50 kilos a year were ever made, and regulatory pressures have shut down the African extraction operations entirely.

The smell is extraordinary — intensely floral and narcotic, with the richness of gardenia, the sweetness of jasmine, and the waxy warmth of orange blossom, all layered over an unexpected chocolate-orange depth and faint bitter almond undertone. It appeared in Cartier Panthère, Estée Lauder Pleasures, and Bertrand Duchaufour's Timbuktu, where it anchored the exotic floral heart. In West Africa, the flowers have been used for centuries to perfume hair, linen, and baths.

This TruAbs® base is a 100% natural reconstruction — no synthetics — built to deliver the same olfactory profile now that the genuine absolute is unobtainable. Use it in tuberose and gardenia accords, heavy oriental florals, or anywhere you want narcotic white-flower richness with depth. It pairs beautifully with ylang-ylang, jasmine, orange flower absolute, styrax, and isoeugenol. Available pure and at 10% in natural TEC for easier blending. A little goes a very long way.
